N ew York: World Civil Defence Day is being observed on 1st March across the world with the aim to highlight need for civil protection and preparation of civil societies for disaster risk prevention.
Topic of World Civil Defence Day 2014 is “Civil Defence and Culture of Prevention for a safer society”.
This Day commemorates the entry into force of the International Civil Defence Organization Constitution as an intergovernmental organization in 1972 and has two main purposes‚ that of bringing to the attention of the world public the vital importance of Civil Protection and of raising awareness of the preparedness for‚ and prevention and self-protection measures in the event of accidents or disasters; that of paying tribute to the efforts‚ sacrifices and accomplishments of all the national services responsible for the fight against disasters.

Every year, the 1st of March marks the global celebration of the World Civil Defence Day established by the International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO)
in 1990.
The aim of this celebration is to establish a platform to build safer and more united communities within all nations.
The World Civil Defence Day was created to commemorate the entry into force of the ICDO Constitution in 1972 and has the threefold purpose of bringing to the attention of the public the vital importance of Civil Protection; of raising the awareness on prevention and self-protection measures in the case of accidents or disasters; and of paying tribute to the efforts, sacrifices and accomplishments of all the national services responsible for the fight against disasters.
