However, no causalities were reported. Twelve fire tenders were pressed into service and, after an operation lasting eight-and-a-half hours, the fire was completely doused.
According to Fire Department officials, the fire broke out in the first floor of the building around 3.15 am. Chandrashekar, who lives next to the building, noticed thick smoke emanating and alerted emergency services. An electrical shop next to the saw mill was completely gutted and two adjacent buildings were also damaged. It is suspected that the fire broke out due to an electrical short-circuit. The loss is yet to be ascertained.
The firemen took extra precautions to prevent the fire from spreading as inflammable material like wood, chemicals and other combustible material were stocked in the building. Some of the building’s walls collapsed after its beams gave way due to the intense heat.
The factory belonged to Nagannna, a resident of Bommasandra. A senior fire officer said the building was built illegally. It neither had fire-fighting equipment nor a no-objection certificate from the department.
Hebbagodi police are investigating the case.
