GUWAHATI, Jan 9 – Khagen Sarma, a 1982 batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the next Director General of Assam Police. He is now serving as DG of Civil Defence and Home Guards. However, the date on which Sarma will take over as head of the State police force has not yet been decided. The present DG, JN Choudhury, who will take over as DG of the National Security Guard, is likely to relinquish charge after January 26 and Sarma will take over charge from him. During his career as an IPS officer, Sarma had served as SP of the districts of Karimganj, North Cachar Hills and Jorhat and served as Principal of the Police Training College. He also served as DIG of Police of the Northern Range before joining the Special Branch as DIG in 1997. He served as DIG, IGP and Additional DG in the Special Branch before taking over as DG of Civil Defence and Home Guards in August last year.
