These firemen don't just fight flames, but also rescue birds and animals

Jul 26, 2016,

Bengaluru: Last week, the fire and emergency services department saved a barn owl in Mahadevapura, east Bengaluru. The winged creature was severely injured in stone pelting by some rogues. Thanks to the rescue personnel who reached the spot on time, the bird was treated at a nearby veterinary hospital and is better now.
The Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Service in Bengaluru does much more than merely douse flames and control raging infernos. The team also attends to rescue calls pertaining to birds and animals in distress. In fact, birds account for the maximum number of rescued creatures by emergency services in the city. They are often found nestling in large complexes and branches of old trees, say fire officials.

The team works closely with Karnataka Civil Defence volunteers. "We receive four to five rescue calls daily . In most cases, its birds that are injured, dehydrated or stuck somewhere, followed by cats and cows," said MA Guruprasad, a fire department employee who coordinates such rescue operations.

Among the oft-rescued birds are pigeons, eagles, crows, kites and owls. "Cubbon Park, Lalbagh, Shivajinagar, Ulsoor, Murphy Town and BHEL industrial unit on Mysuru Road are some of the hotspots for bird rescues," added Guruprasad.

Often, birds get trapped in kite threads which are entangled in branches. This year alone, the fire department rescued 70-75 creatures, of which over 50 were birds alone. Also, 10-15 cats and 10-odd cows have been saved, some of which were found injured and a few stuck in drains.

"We get calls about cats stranded on branches of trees. They manage to climb building rooftops and trees but then are too scared to come down," said a fire department official.

Early this year, Mohan K, a volunteer from Karnataka Civil Defence, received a call to rescue a barn owl that got stuck in a messy kite thread atop a massive old tree on Richmond Road. Volunteers rushed to the 9th floor of an adjacent building and tried to pull down the owl using a ball and nylon thread.

Mohan recalled: "The poor thing landed on my hand and I cuddled it all the way to the rehab centre." Later, the owl was dropped back to the same spot as it probably was nesting there and had a family on the same tree.

National Civil Defence Collage : Nagpur : NCDC 59th foundation day celebrations on 5 March 2016

NCDC foundation day will be observed on 5 March 2016.......technical demonstrations by QRT's of Bengaluru, Jaipur and Railways will work along with 25 students of Tirpude College of Social Work....

Nagpur: As the country's only civil defence college run by the Ministry of Home Affairs celebrates its 59th foundation day, big plans are afoot. Nagpur Civil Defence College (NCDC) is preparing to put up a grand show on March 5 with city MP and Union minister for road & surface transport Nitin Gadkari as chief guest.
GS Saini, director of NCDC, said, "We will have lot of things on display and a demonstration will be given on various trainings we provide here. Currently we have students from Tirpude College of Social Work training with us and they will play an active role in the demonstrations on March 5."
NCDC has been the premier destination in country for training civilians to act as the first line of defence in case of natural and/or manmade disaster. It is the only institute that trains trainers from all over the country in survival skills. NCDC has been conducting highly skilled programs on Basic Life Support, Advance Life Support and Advance HAZMAT Life Support since last 15 years and has a number of modern simulation dummies for trainees to practise upon.
The NCDC campus has developed the concept of 'disaster city' where the trainees can get a feel of possible threats they may face. There is an entire train coach and even a chopper (for demo purpose) on campus to simulate rescue operations. Saini has also erected a tall building like structure to simulate highrise rescue operations along with a rubble site so that trainees can understand how to look for survivors in case of an earthquake. NCDC has been conducting programmes regularly for developing skills in school and college teachers to deal with emergencies anywhere.
Keshav Patil, principal of Tirupude College of Social Work, said, "My students are learning a lot from the training at NCDC and I am confident it will help them handle disaster situations better. They, in turn, can train others in the college or their neighbourhoods so the first precautions during a disaster can be taken. These students can be then sent to areas where there is a need to manage disasters like floods, earthquake, etc."

#30_Jan Martyrs_Day mha.nic.in :: 2-minute observance of silence on 30th Jan for Martyrs day

2-minute observance of silence on 30th Jan for Martyrs day: Ministry of Home Affairs
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a directive that from now on every year on January 30th, two minutes of silence will be observed at 11 am throughout the country in the memory of those who were martyred in India's freedom struggle.

New Delhi, Jan. 10: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Sunday issued a directive that from now on every year on January 30th, two minutes of silence will be observed at 11 am throughout the country in the memory of those who were martyred in India’s freedom struggle.  According to the standing instructions by the MHA, silence should be observed at work and all movement must be stopped throughout the country during the two minutes.
The silence period will be indicated by the sounds of ‘sirens or Army guns’ from 10: 59 am to 11:00 am and after two minutes the sirens will sound again from 11:02 am till 11:03 am.  Stating that in the past the general public did not adhere to the ‘solemnity of the occasion’ and went about their business, the MHA has asserted that state governments and union territories need to ensure that ‘Martyrs Day’ is observed with due solemnity and better public participation.
